The Beginners Guide to Thick Hair

Bonjour Dah-lings!

Our fine-haired sisters think we’ve got it easy, but the truth is a thick mane is both a blessing and a curse (RIP broken hairbrushes and bottles of conditioner taken from us far too soon). The truth of the matter is that we always seem to want what we can’t have. Any thick-haired beauty knows – a voluptuous mane requires time, patience, and a stronger than average hair tie. Sigh…But don’t give up on your bodacious strands just yet! We’ve put together a few tips and tricks to make managing your tresses a little bit easier

YES, YOU CAN ROCK A TOP KNOT

If you’re reading this, you likely know the struggle of tying your hair up into a messy bun or top knot, only to have it slide down your head into a floppy, sad mess. So not chic! The secret to making sure your strands stay put is all in the technique. Heavy hair requires a strong infrastructure! If you make a tiny half-bun first, then wrap it around the mini-bun, you have the support you need to keep your knot on top.

CONDITIONER TO SHAMPOO RATIO?

Do you find yourself running out of conditioner long before shampoo? It might be worth investing in a higher concentrated conditioner. Since thick hair tends to frizz, you’ll want a product heavy on the hydration. Hydrating Condition, as well as the rest of our Leau de Mare – Hydrate Collection, will smooth that unwanted frizz and moisturize hair, and because it’s highly concentrated, a little will go a long way.

BRUSH WITHOUT THE POUF

Unless you’re on your way to an 80’s costume party, you’d prefer a look that’s less pouf, more polish. But it can be near impossible to brush your hair without making your already big hair bigger. To combat this, add Mighty Hair Spray to the brush before pulling it through, dampening it just a bit. This will help seal the cuticle and reduce static. If you’re worried about your hair looking crunchy, start your brushing underneath your hair instead of on top of your head.

KNOW WHEN TO LEAVE IT TO THE PROFESSIONALS

Sometimes (let’s be honest, most times), the simplest way to solve your hair woes is to make a trip to your salon. Your stylist can thin your hair out, which will take out some of that heavy volume and leave your hair feeling much more manageable.

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, BRAID IT

Braids look stunning with thick hair, and you don’t have to worry about trying to add volume. When your mane refuses to behave, weave it into shape!

Happy Styling Dah-lings !
